Introduction to Canopy’s Remote Action Capabilities for Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM)

Remote monitoring and management (RMM) software helps technical teams ensure their deployment of IoT devices or smart hardware systems are functioning properly. RMM technology eliminates the need for on-site visits and reduces downtime by enabling immediate issue detection and remote resolution of device issues.

The primary way that downtime-causing issues are resolved remotely is through various remote action capabilities inside RMM software platforms. In this post, we explore the variety of ways Canopy RMM software allows users to send commands, handle files, manage mobile devices, and access their devices remotely to help reduce device downtime.

Let’s explore how Canopy RMM not only reduces device downtime but transforms the landscape of device management for technical teams.

Canopy Natively Supports Standard Scripting for Windows and Linux Devices

Canopy allows users to send a command straight to your target devices in a variety of ways. Our platform has remote actions that are split between Windows and Linux devices. For Windows-based devices, users can expect to send command line prompts, PowerShell commands, and execute batch scripts. For devices running a Linux-based operating system, Canopy allows for the native execution of files and bash scripts. With these remote actions at your fingertips, users can easily send the most common remote commands down to their fleet with a few clicks of a button.

Canopy Enables Easy Send / Pull File Transfer Capabilities and Software Updates

For handling files, Canopy has three actions that allow for files to be transferred to and from the target device. The “Send Files” action places a file of a user’s choice in a selected directory, which is useful for rewriting configuration files or sending scripts to the device endpoint to be executed. The “Pull Files” action is like the “Send Files” action but allows users to retrieve selected files or directories from the device to view. This can be helpful when troubleshooting a performance issue with a device or application.

Canopy also has the “Software Update” action. This action allows for files to be bundled together alongside customizable instructions on delivery. This capability allows users to manage their fleet's firmware and software versioning in customizable ways based on how their team might want to maintain and support device upgrades.

Canopy Has Standard Mobile Device Management (MDM) Capabilities for iOS and Android Devices

Canopy also has a built-in Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution for iOS and Android devices, with an array of actions that allow users to manage these kinds of devices. For iOS, Canopy’s MDM capabilities allow users to manage applications, manage and create profiles, send commands for enabling lost mode, and a variety of actions that enable real-time monitoring and management. For Android, Canopy has a built-in place policy manager that allows for policies to be sent to devices and for those policies to be monitored. Both solutions provide users with a real-time health view and remote management of their mobile devices.

Canopy Gives Remote Access Capabilities for Windows and Linux Devices

Canopy enables users to quickly take a wide set of powerful remote actions to maintain and support devices in the field

Canopy has a very powerful automation workflow feature that allows users to create customized remote action responses when issues are detected in real time. Many users rely on Canopy’s automation capabilities over the remote access functionality as it is one of the core differentiators of RMM software vs. remote access software. However, in certain cases, users want to see what is happening at the device level, and as such Canopy enables users to directly access their devices remotely.

For Windows devices, Canopy has partnered with Splashtop to allow users to start instant remote access sessions with devices managed on Canopy’s platform. For Linux devices, Canopy has these actions available through Canopy Connect, which allows for Secure Shell (SSH) access along with Remote Web Access to devices on the same network.

Canopy Allows Users to Schedule Any Action and Run Any Action in Bulk Across Their Device Base

Canopy RMM facilitates efficient management of device fleets by enabling bulk actions, allowing administrators to simultaneously implement changes or updates across multiple devices. This “bulk update” feature streamlines processes and ensures uniformity in the deployment of policies or software updates. Additionally, Canopy's capability for scheduling actions is particularly useful for deploying updates during off-peak hours, like in the middle of the night. This ensures minimal disruption to users, as updates can be executed when devices are not actively in use, enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Canopy’s Flexible Remote Actions Can Be Used to Support and Maintain Any Smart Hardway System

Canopy offers a comprehensive and flexible platform for managing IoT and smart devices across various operating systems. Its capabilities range from executing commands and scripts on Windows and Linux devices to transferring files and managing software updates. Additionally, the integration with Splashtop RMM and Canopy Connect enhances direct remote access capabilities for Windows and Linux devices. With the variety of remote actions available through Canopy, each user will find some that are more beneficial than others to their solutions. Canopy allows users to manipulate these actions with action management and the use of templates so that their action architecture can be set up to best support their unique device deployment needs.
